A Not-So-Subtle Hint

If I'm indoors around 4:30 in the afternoon, this is the sight that often greets me through my front door windows...

I guess it's their way of saying "FEED US NOW PLEASE." (Sorry for the sub-par photo; it was tough to capture from inside looking out into the late afternoon glare; in case you can't tell, that's three of four ducks on the left and three of five chickens on the right begging for their dinner. If they are feeling particularly demanding, they might start pecking the window glass.)

Happy Fourth of July! Carlos and I have a very mellow (aka boring) day ahead... Matt has to work and all of my family seems to have gone out of town for the holiday weekend. So I guess it's just Carlos and me at home with a neurotic dog hiding under the bed (Otis is afraid of fireworks).

Our Feathered Family Continues to Grow

I think I already mentioned that we got a third duck a week or two ago, who Carlos named Polly Wolly Doodle. Well, he's been having a bit of a hard time since the original two ducks (Shannon and Dean) wanted to pick on him all the time. Today we took a chance and adopted a fourth duck in hopes that he and Polly would bond, and so far, so good!

The new duck's name is Mallow (he's on the right in the above photo), and he spent most of the day in the pen with Polly today; then in the evening we let all four ducks be together, and they got along better than any other day since Polly has been here. What a relief! I'm still keeping the two pairs separate when I can't supervise, but today felt like a definite step forward.

Oh, and here's a cute picture I took of Chuck Norris yesterday ogling the object of his desire (the crackers, not Matt's crotch) -

Bath Time!

Dust bath time, that is... The chickens have taken over this one area of our yard that is shaded by some nice big trees and dug a bunch of holes in the grass to bathe in. Here's Clarabelle taking her 'bath' today.

Sorry for the crappy quality... I used the regular camera, not the Flip.

Now, I promise, I'm off to work on a non-chicken-related post. Really.

Happy Mother's Day!

I hope all the moms out there are having a fabulous day, especially my mom, who I am on my way to see now!

Sadly, it seems motherhood is not in the cards for Greta the chicken this time around. I finally found her nest yesterday evening, with ten eggs in it, and to try to protect her from predators, I moved her and her eggs into a large dog crate after dark last night. I awoke this morning to find her highly stressed in the crate, wanting to come out, so I let her out and she headed straight for her original nest. She hung out over there for a few hours, ignoring her eggs in their new location, and then eventually joined the rest of the flock by midday.

I can't say that I'm too terribly disappointed (although it seems almost sacrilegious to say such a thing on Mother's Day of all days!); if we decide to have more chickens, I think I'd rather rescue some than bring more into the world, but I do feel sorry for little Greta, and her little eggs look rather forlorn and abandoned.

Oh well, it's reassuring to have Greta back in the fold, and safe from any scary creatures that could have snapped her up during the night out there in the woods. (That's her in the back.)

Found!!!

Guess what I found tonight!!! Can you spot Greta (our AWOL chicken) hiding behind all those leaves?

Pulling the leaves aside...

I finally located her nest tonight when she scampered out of the tall weeds at the edge of the woods at feeding time. I gave her a good pile of food and headed over to check out the nest. I wish I'd had my camera with me then but I was rushing to leave for a dinner date. There were about ten eggs in the nest.

Now we have to decide what to do about all of this. I'm planning to go out after dark tonight and attempt to move Greta and all of the eggs into a large dog crate lined with plenty of straw, so she will at least be safe from predators while we figure out what to do. We're considering taking some of the eggs away but leaving her a few and letting her hatch just a couple of chicks. We really don't want to end up with a ton of them, especially since it's very hard to have more than one rooster around, and some of the babies are bound to be boys.

The rest of the chickens were right where they belonged at bedtime, all lined up in their chicken house.

11:18 p.m. - UPDATE - Mission accomplished; mom and ten eggs safely in crate. Only pecked once.

Daily Dose of Ducks & Chickens

We have had quite a bit of poultry drama lately! First, poor Dean the duck has a really nasty eye infection. That's him in the front - I'm not sure how well you can tell with a photo of this size, but his eye is really messed up.

We went to the vet on Tuesday and got some ointment to put on his eyes three times a day (only one is messed up right now; hopefully it stays that way). Dean has been surprisingly good about being caught and medicated; what a sweet boy. The vet said that it could be an infection he caught from the chickens, and that it would be a good idea to house them separately. I had already been considering this, since the ducks and the chickens fight occasionally, and I want them to feel safe and relaxed when they are penned up for the night... so we are going to add on to our poultry compound, with a separate enclosure for the ducks to stay in at night. I just hope his eye gets better; there's still a chance the eye might not make it. Matt was making jokes about tiny eye patches - I feel too sorry for the poor little guy to joke much, but it does make for a pretty silly mental image.

On to the chickens... Not to be outdone by those silly little ducks, Greta the chicken (aka No Toes) has decided to add some stress and confusion to our lives as well. This is the fifth day in a row that she has disappeared all day, and she even spent one full night out as well. I guess that means she has a nest somewhere. Our yard is totally fenced, but part is open lawn and part is pretty heavily wooded... I guess she went into the woods somewhere and made a nest.

The 'don't breed or buy while homeless animals die' philosophy is near and dear to my heart, and I really don't care to have a bunch of baby chicks because (a) I don't want to have to find homes for them; I'm too particular and probably nobody would be good enough so we'd end up having to keep them all, (b) we don't have room for that many more chickens, and (c) even if we did, I feel like we should use that space for already-existing birds, not bring new ones into the world.

That being said, I feel surprisingly guilty and conflicted about trying to keep Greta from incubating her eggs (by penning her up at night) - she is such a loner, and she doesn't seem bonded to any of the other chickens. When they all head out for the day in their little pack, she just goes off by herself and does her own thing. The other three hens have lived together for a long time, and maybe they see Greta as an interloper, or maybe they shun her because of her lack of toes, or maybe she's just an independent gal. Whatever the reason, she seems lonely and isolated, and I have this perception that she's determined to sit on her nest come hell or high water because she wants to build her own little family. And that's sweet. And sad.

I know it's the right thing to do to keep her in at night, both for her own safety and to prevent unwanted chickie babies, but it makes me feel like a big meanie head. Of course, if she just refuses to come back again, like she did the other night, then I suppose it's out of our hands... I wonder how much time the eggs can spend not being sat on and still incubate?

Cutest. Chickens. Ever.

This is Rosa. She is a character. She's definitely the top chicken, and she's also the most friendly and inquisitive. She's not friendly enough to want to be petted (none of them are - yet), but she's always interested in what I am up to when I go outside. When I collect the eggs, she runs into the chicken house and looks at me as if to say 'What are you doing with those?!?' ... The other day, as I crouched down to change their water, she pecked me on the butt. :-) She and the rooster are the only two who will eat treats out of my hand. Here she is coming up on the porch to see what I was doing this morning while I took some photos of beads -

And here she is with her man, Chuck Norris -

Okay, enough chicken fun. I need to go pack orders!

PS - Please send healing vibes for Dean the duck; he's having some kind of an eye problem and we're taking him to the vet tomorrow... should be interesting trying to catch and transport him!

There's a chicken convention going on in my planter box...

...and I'm not happy about it. I'm ready to plant some vegetables in my raised planter bed, but the chickens keep digging holes in it. Anyone have suggestions? I tried sprinkling cayenne pepper on the soil but apparently my chickens don't mind a little spice in their dirt.

Moment of Zen

It's funny how entertained I am by just sitting and watching the chickens do their chickeny business.

Home Safe & Sound

We got back from our little trip today and it's nice to be home. We had fun visiting family and friends; unfortunately I was so preoccupied with keeping Carlos happy and safe, I never really got it together to take any pictures until the guilt caught up with me this morning and I took a few cute ones in the diner where we had breakfast. Carlos, as usual, had a blast hanging out with his big cousin Calvyn, who (whom?) he idolizes.

{dog puppet eating tub of jam}

We got a nice little tour of Animal Place today when we picked up our chickens. The staff was very nice about showing us around even though it wasn't a regular tour day. The chickens did great on the way home... they were a little stinky in my car but that's not their fault of course.

We wedged 'em in between all of our luggage...

I took a few pictures this evening - they aren't the greatest, but I'll share anyways.

Front to back on the ramp, that's Rosa (the boss), Clara, and LaFonda. The ducks (whose names we've finally decided are Shannon and Dean - named after the couple who runs the rescue group we adopted them from) are swimming in the background, and the rooster is there on the ground on the right. We're having a bit of a heated discussion over the rooster's name - Matt is pushing hard for Chuck Norris and I'm madly in love with Thomas Magnum (both the name itself, and the character, and the show, ha ha).

Another shot of Rosa, LaFonda, and Clara

And here's the fourth hen, Greta, who seems to be a bit of a loner.

Aren't they cute? I'll post better pictures in a few days once we let them out into the main yard and I don't have to shoot through the fence.
